Our Farm

Treadlight Farm is based in Kerhonkson, NY. Since 2015, we’ve specialized in growing certified organic ornamental plants and cut-flowers. We aim to provide high quality plants and flowers while making responsible choices for our staff and the environment.

Meet your ornamental needs with certified organic plants. You can be confident that our flowers and plants are safe for both people and wildlife.

Our Plants

All In-House, All Organic

We are not resellers - we propagate all of the plants that we sell. Most are seed propagated, though we do produce plants from cuttings and divisions as well.

100% of our products are certified organic by NOFA-NY, LLC.

Ecologically Beneficial for our Region

Our plants are upland and coastal straight species (non cultivars) native to eastern North America. That means that they derive from plants found in our natural landscapes, providing maximum wildlife benefit for gardens, landscape plantings and restoration projects.

We always look for regionally ecotypic seed first - meaning the seed was collected in our region - and often collect it ourselves if it is not available commercially.

Plug Trays

We like plugs! We plant tens of thousands of plugs every year in our own fields. They are easier to plant on a large scale than quarts or gallons, saving money with less time spent planting. Smaller plants are more economical and also have higher survival rates than larger, more mature specimens. Our regular plugs are great for green roofs, gardens, and nurseries potting up to larger sizes. Our deep plugs are especially good for restoration projects and often reach flowering size in their first season.

We offer plug trays in 4 sizes:

  • Deep 50s

  • Deep 30s

  • Regular 72s

  • Regular 50s

We also occasionally offer bare root plants for sale when we have to move or divide plants on the farm.

Mostly Perennials

We primarily grow herbaceous perennials, though we also offer some annuals and biennials.

Many Cut Flowers

We began as cut-flower growers, and this tends to influence our plant selection. Many of our native plants are great for floral design work when planted in production spaces. We discourage foraging native flowers, foliages and seed heads from the wild, so if you want to arrange with native plants, grow them yourself!

Why Organic?

Organic plants are commonplace at farmers markets and in grocery stores. But what about the plants in our gardens and planters, and in our public spaces? And the plants we use for restoring habitats?

We believe that 'ornamental' plants merit the same attention and care as the plants that we eat. Most plants, after all, are food or shelter for other creatures.

Because they are not made for human consumption, ornamental plants do not come under the same regulatory scrutiny that food crops do, and often contain much greater concentrations of toxic pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides than conventional fruits and vegetables. These chemicals help create perfect looking plants, but they are toxic for the people who handle them, and for the insects and creatures who eat them or use them to make homes. Why would we risk injuring the very wildlife that native plants are meant to nourish?

Many ornamental growers use organic practices but are not certified - and we think that’s great! You should shop with them! Most are probably telling the truth.

But we also believe in verifiability and accountability. The best way to guarantee that the plants you purchase are not treated with synthetic pesticides and herbicides that will harm you or the environment is to choose certified organic plants.
