The Farm

Treadlight Farm is based in Kerhonkson, NY. Since 2015, we’ve specialized in growing certified organic ornamental plants and cut-flowers. We aim to provide high quality plants and flowers while making responsible choices for our staff and the environment.

Meet your ornamental needs with certified organic plants. You can be confident that our flowers and plants are safe for both people and wildlife.

Our Plants

All In-House, All Organic

We are not resellers - we propagate all of the plants that we sell. Most are seed propagated, though we do make cuttings and divisions as well.

100% of our products are certified organic by NOFA-NY, LLC.

Mostly Native

Most of the plants we offer are upland and coastal natives of northeastern North America. We always look for regionally ecotypic seed first, and often collect it ourselves if it is not available commercially.

We also offer non-native plants, but only those that we know do not spread very much or at all in gardens and landscapes. We do not sell anything that we know to be invasive.

Mostly Plug Trays

We grow a lot of mature plants from plugs. We like plugs! We plant tens of thousands of plugs every year in our own fields. They are easier to plant on a large scale than quarts or gallons, saving money with less time spent planting. Smaller plants are more economical and also have higher survival rates than larger, more mature specimens.

We offer plug trays in 4 sizes:

  • Deep 50s

  • Deep 30s

  • Regular 72s

  • Regular 50s

We also occasionally offer bare root plants for sale when we have to move or divide plants on the farm.

Mostly Perennials

We primarily grow herbaceous perennials, though we also offer annuals and biennials. We plan to offer some woody plants in the coming seasons.

Many Cut Flowers

We began as cut-flower growers, and this tends to influence our plant selection. All of our non-native plants make great cut-flowers, and many of our native plants do as well.

We believe that native flowers, foliages, and seedheads - when grown in agricultural production spaces - should be used in floral design work. They can influence the kinds of plants people desire for their gardens and landscapes. And even in agricultural spaces, even when they are harvested, they often provide food or shelter to local creatures throughout their production cycle.

We discourage foraging native flowers, foliages and seed heads from wild spaces.

Why Organic?

Organic plants are common on farms and in supermarket vegetable and fruit aisles. But what about the plants in our vases, around our homes, and in our public spaces? And the plants we use for restoring natural habitats?

We believe that ornamental plants merit the same attention and care as the plants that we eat. Most plants, after all, are food or shelter for other creatures.

Because they are not made for human consumption, ornamental plants do not come under the same pesticide regulations that food crops do, and often contain much greater concentrations of harmful chemicals than conventional fruits and vegetables. These chemicals help create perfect looking plants, but they are toxic for the people who handle them, and for the insects and creatures who eat them or use them to make homes.

Many ornamental growers use organic practices but are not certified - and we think that’s great! You should shop with them! Most are probably telling the truth.

But we also believe in verifiability and accountability. The best way to ensure that the plants you purchase are not treated with synthetic pesticides and herbicides that will harm you or the environment is to choose organic plants.
